a message from the captain

leading the tribe

When more hands carry the legacy, we all stand taller and the next generation walks safer because of it.

From the time I was six years old, reaching up to steel hoops and feeling the drums shake my chest, I knew this was bigger than dance. For me, the Gombeys have always been about place, purpose, and protection. About giving our boys something solid to stand on.

Vibe Tribe isn’t just a troupe. It’s a safe space. A place where young men can show up as they are, be corrected with love, and grow with pride. Because a lot of our boys don’t get that. They get judged, misunderstood, or written off before they even get a chance. Here, they get to belong.

The Gombeys were born out of resistance. This was how our ancestors spoke when they weren’t allowed to speak. Every beat was rebellion. Every mask was survival. Every step said, you can’t erase me. That same spirit lives in us now.

As Captain, I take that seriously. My job is to protect this space and the young men in it. To teach discipline, respect, and brotherhood, not just the steps. I want them to know that being a Black man means more than what the world says it is. It means legacy. It means leadership.

This is not just about keeping a tradition alive. It is about shaping men. About reminding them that their worth is not up for debate and their roots are something to be proud of. The goal is not perfection. It is progress. It is character. It is legacy, built one beat, one lesson, one young man at a time.

We move together. We honour those before us. And we protect those beside us. Because when more hands carry the legacy, we all stand taller and the next generation walks safer because of it.
